Facts About Ticks
- Ticks can live without feeding for up to two years!
- Ticks feed on hosts in all stages of life except for the egg stage.
- Nymphs and Adult Ticks can spread disease
- Ticks spend most time in shaded areas.
- Ticks can carry multiple diseases at once.
- There are around 900 species of ticks throughout the world, here on Long Island we have four species of ticks.
- Ticks “quest” which means they search for a host with their legs spread wide.
- A Ticks saliva has an anesthetic that allows the bite to go unnoticed which allows it to feed.
- Ticks are not insects, they are actually arachnids.
- Ticks use scent, breath, vibrations, and movement to detect a nearby host.
Facts About Mosquitos
- Mosquito’s have been around since the Jurassic period
- Only female mosquitos bite – Females need the blood for the eggs to develop.
- The bump you get after a bite is from the mosquitos saliva, which contains a mild anesthetic and anti-coagulant.
- Males live for 10 days and females can live for up to 8 weeks
- Mosquitos often stay within several hundred feet from where they were hatched
- Sweat and body heat helps mosquitos choose there victims because the heat and the odors act like homing beacons.
- A mosquito can drink up to 3 times it’s body weight in blood.
- Female mosquitos can lay up to 300 eggs per clutch.
- It would take 1,000,000 mosquito to drain a human body of its blood.
- There are about 2700 species of mosquitos in the world.
